Tarlac State University is among the Region III awardees for its Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Stars Ratings (three stars) in the ICONS Awards 2023 of the Commission on Higher Education.

Vice President for Research Development and Extension Dr. Murphy P. Mohammed represented TSU in receiving the certificate of commendation and trophy on Friday (October 6) at the PICC in Pasay, Metro Manila.

CHED gives these awards to Philippine higher education institutions that champion global reputation through commendable performance in the CHED-recognized international metrics.

The subcategories of these awards include QS World University Rankings and Stars Ratings, Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, and the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).

TSU garnered Three Stars as an institution on September 14, 2022, where the university scored highest with five stars in the categories of Academic Development and Social Responsibility, followed by four stars in Teaching and Facilities.

University President Dr. Arnold E. Velasco, former VP for Planning and Quality Assurance Dr. Niño B. Corpuz, and former Quality Assurance Director Dr. Maria Socorro D. Valdez formally received the certification in Indonesia on November 9, 2022.

Preparations for the QS Stars Ratings started in 2021 during the term of former TSU President Dr. Myrna Q. Mallari through the Office of Quality Assurance - International Accreditation Unit led by Dr. Corpuz, Dr. Valdez, former Int’l Accreditation Unit Head Ms. Maricor Cheska Santos, and current Int’l Accreditation Unit Head Ms. Liana Faith Q. De Leon.

The Internationalization Champions of Nation-Building and Sustainability or ICONS Awards was organized after the successful ASEAN ICONS 2022 last year, celebrating the global excellence of Philippine higher education institutions.

TSU was also awarded last year for its THE Impact Rankings milestone.

This year, TSU is preparing its application for THE Impact Rankings 2024 and WURI.

The ICONS Awards 2023 is organized by the CHED International Affairs Service headed by Atty. Lily Freida Macabangun-Milla.
